On September 23-24th the Houston Writer’s Guild is hosting IndiePalooza, featuring a wide array of publishing experts, from PR, marketing, editorial, and of course, cover design. I’m honored to be attending as a speaker on Friday night, where I’ll be sharing my experiences and knowledge to help independent authors create the best book cover they can for their work.  How hard can it be? Do you really need to hire a professional designer? How can I make my book stand out from the rest and target the audience that will love it?

I’ve been working in publishing, graphic design, pr, and marketing for the past 15 years before starting my own company, Wayword Author Services, where I focus solely on helping independent authors bring their books to the next level. I love working with authors because I come from a family of writers, and helped my own mom publish her YA science fiction series this year. It was a bumpy road, but we learned a ton this year!

Some of the subjects I’ll touch on:

  • Art style: what message is your cover sending, and who is it attracting?
  • Typography: What fonts are appropriate for my book title and text?
  • What elements should I include on my book cover?
  • Should I design my own cover? What program can I use?
  • How can I make my book cover stand out?

I invite independent authors to join this event, which will be an amazing place to network with a wide array of talent from the Houston area, and to connect with this amazing family of authors. I hope to see you there!
